Envirothon Contest
The Envirothon is a program for high school students to learn more about our natural environment. The competition for students grades 9-12. Teams of five students train and are tested in five areas (Wildlife, Soils, Forestry, Aquatics, and the Current Environmental Issue).
The Envirothon experience is a unique approach to environmental education. The teams compete in an outdoor setting. The activities are designed to help the students become environmentally aware, action-oriented adults.
The contest exist at three levels. Regional (or County) contests, State and Nationals. The winning team from each county goes on to represent it's county at the State Envirothon. The winner of the state competition will represent Kansas at the National Envirothon.
Students are awarded medals at the state level and can win scholarships and prizes at the national level.
Kansas held its first Envirothon in 1992 and Osborne County has participated with a team in the past. For more information about this program contact the Conservation Office at 785-346-2128.
ECO-Meet
ECO-Meets offer a chance for high school students to show what they know and win scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to the top three teams and the top two individuals in general wildlife and focus test. Students are tested individually and as a group in the following four areas.
Tests include: general wildlife, focus test (previous tests focused on reptiles and amphibians, entomology, and ornithology). Both of these tests are lab type test. The scavenger hunt - the ability to locate and identify various natural objects. This takes place outside and mainly tests ability to identify native plants. Interpretation-ability to communicate ideas to an audience. This is more than a skit and less than a speech.

Speech Contest
For students grades 9-12. Speeches need to be five to eight minutes. Entries are due in by September. Contact the district for entry forms and material on the speech topic.
Coloring Contest
Contest is open to all students in Kindergarten through second grade and home schooled students. Judging takes place for each grade. Entries are due the middle of December each year. Coloring sheets and rules are provided by the district for the students. Awards are presented to the winners at our annual meeting.
Poster Contest
Contest is open to all students in third through sixth grade and home schooled students. Two categories will be judged. One for third grade and another for 4-6 grades. Poster paper and rules are provided by the district for the students. Awards are presented to the winners at our annual meeting.
